November 27, 2002

We'd like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow... enjoy the football, food and family, as it really is a time to give thanks for what we have. Someone close once told me, if you don't think you are rich, list TEN things you have that money can't buy.

As for site updates, the December Newsletter is online as well as the December Advertising Guide. Please check out and give business to our advertisers, as they represent the industry we work in, and lower our monthly mailing costs to you, our members.

Happy Thanksgiving from the CBPA, to all our members, sponsors & guests!

Happy Halloween from the CBPA!

October 3, 2002

It has been a while since I've posted here, but the CBPA Annual Conference was a very successful event. Comments received from those filling out comment forms were very positive, if you would like to send comments about the conference electronically, email us here. The CBPA would like to thank all the speakers and vendors filling the booths surrounding the main conference area, as without their participation, it would not have been as great of an event.

Website updates, be sure and check the Meetings Page for the monthly meeting to be held next week in Westminster... also, two newsletters have been added along with two advertising guides, all on the Newsletters & Minutes page.

September 3, 2002

We hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe Labor Day weekend, and there is some news to talk about. The meeting to finalize plans and stuff conference packets for the CBPA Annual Conference is tomorrow at 9:00 am, so if you have a little time to help out, go over to the Meetings Page for a map and information. There will be a short business meeting as well.

The September Newsletter and Advertising Guide are online on the Newsletters & Minutes page, so take a moment to view those, along with the Northern Subchapter Newsletter for those in the Fort Collins area.

Finally, the CBPA has prepared a Proclamation Statement for a Backflow Emergency Response Plan, a good read for those that work for a water utility. One last item, the by-laws for the CBPA are online here, and the September conference will include some proposed changes for vote by the membership, so take a minute to read those as well.

August 25, 2002

Things are a little slow on the news front leading up to the CBPA Annual Conference mentioned below, but I ran across this article on The Village Voice. A very interesting read for the water professional, so let me quote the first paragraph to get you started:

In 1995 World Bank vice president Ismail Serageldin made a much quoted prediction for the new millennium: "If the wars of this century were fought over oil, the wars of the next century will be fought over water." Serageldin has been proven correct much faster than he or anyone else thought. Two years into the 21st century, the global water wars are upon us.

It talks about how privatization of water systems are affecting the poor countries of the world, and how corporations are charging more than most can pay in these countries. Here are a few other interesting quotes from the article:

"Not only is there the same amount of water on the planet as there was at its creation, it is almost all the same water."

"there are only 8.6 million cubic miles of fresh water left on earth, a mere 2.6 percent of the 330 million cubic feet of total water. The UN predicts that two-thirds of the world's population will live in water-scarce regions by 2025, and many of them in regions previously considered water-rich, like the United States."

"According to Sandra Postel of the Global Water Policy Project, a water conservation advocacy group, there were 5000 large dams (more than 15 meters high) worldwide in 1950. There are now 45,000. On average, there have been two large dams constructed every day for the past 50 years."

"Now four of the world's greatest rivers (the Ganges, Yellow River, Nile, and Colorado) routinely dry up before reaching the ocean, and water that normally would roll through the earth and feed aquifers runs off pavements and rooftops into sewers, eventually ending up (usually carrying pesticides and toxins) in the ocean, but without moisturizing forests and marshlands on the way. Add relentless human consumption, industrial farming, and global warming and you've got the Ogallala Aquifer, which stretches from the Texas Panhandle to South Dakota and is believed to have once contained 4 trillion tons of pristine water. It's now mined continuously by over 200,000 groundwater wells. They pull out 13 million gallons per minute—which is 14 times faster than nature's replenishing rate."

"Canada's abundant fresh water supply has already whetted the appetite of George Bush. There's been talk from his administration about using the existing oil-pipeline infrastructure in the Northern Provinces to flow Canadian water to the American Midwest, which, under existing the North American Free Trade Agreement, is perfectly legitimate. And once Canada opens the taps, it can't turn them off again without violating NAFTA accords."

All in all, a very interesting read for those of us in the water industry... and further proof that cross-connection issues will gain importance over time. With the dwindling supply of fresh water world-wide, protection of that valuable resource will have a high priority on political agendas. Read the whole article here.

August 13, 2002

The Conference Page has all the information you will need to register for the CBPA 2002 Annual Conference, so be sure to check it out. Just like last year, the CBPA has obtained Water Distribution training units that can be applied to the Water Distribution certifications now required in Colorado.

August 12, 2002

Planning for the CBPA 2002 Annual Conference is in full swing, and we've opened a page for information as it becomes available, click here to go there, or just look for the links on the Home page. The only link currently there is the print ad that should be out in the next issue of DB&BP. The registration form is currently being worked on, and should be ready soon.

Some site maintenance, a lot of the 2002 news items were moved to the Archive page, so this one should load a bit faster...

August 1, 2002

The August Newsletter and Advertising Guide are online on this page... The monthly meeting is next week at the Dillon company, so quit procrastinating and RSVP via email, or by phone at 303-399-5566, as soon as possible :)

July 23, 2002

Well, another hot month is coming to a close (can you remember a hotter one?), and the August meeting has a bit more information on the Meetings page. Sounds like a fun meeting with Mike and Todd of the Dillon company showing some repair and troubleshooting tips! The approved June Minutes are online as well on the Newsletter and Minutes page. No one has stepped forward on running the BBQ, guess everyone is too short on time for extra activities :) If anyone would like to step forward, check the July 1st posting below to email...

July 12, 2002

The luncheon meeting at the Arvada Center was a success, and the CBPA would like to thank the Watts/Ames company and Randy Schuster! We also have an update for the August meeting at the Dillon Company, so check out the Meetings page.

July 1, 2002

The Newsletter & Minutes page was updated with the July Newsletter and Advertising guide, be sure and check them out. The May 2002 Minutes are also online...

One other item of note, the Officers have discussed the issue of the Annual BBQ, and none of us have the time to organize and set it up. Would any of you members out there be interested in taking on this fun project? If you have the time and inclination to do so, please email us here. Once the ball is rolling, lots of members chip in to assist whomever heads it up :)

Finally, a BIG Happy Birthday to the good old United States of America... the CBPA would also like to wish a Happy 4th of July to all!

June 29, 2002

The Meetings page was updated for the next meeting, it should be a great agenda and is a lunch time meeting with food! A RSVP is required, so be sure and sign up early.

May 31, 2002

Lots of PDF documents (five actually) uploaded for your reading pleasure, both the March and April Meeting Minutes, the June Newsletter and Advertising Guide, and information on the Pueblo 2002 Spring Backflow Conference. So head on over to the Newsletter/Minutes page to check it all out.

May 23, 2002

There is updated information on the next CBPA monthly meeting on the Meetings Page, please RSVP if you plan on attending. It is in Colorado Springs at the Woodford Company, and might require a little planning for Denver area members.

One other thing to keep in mind, with the water restrictions and drought conditions affecting our state, it is important to maintain our awareness of backflow conditions.

May 13, 2002

The Dillon Co., the CBPA, and the City of Arvada are excited to sponsor a Cross-Connection Control Troubleshooting Seminar on May 22 at the City of Arvada’s Wastewater Facility. The well known Mike Brune and Craig Florence, from the Dillon Co., will be the main instructors. Lots of topics will be covered with a focus on irrigation assemblies. Certificates of attendance will be provided.

The meeting will be held at the Arvada Wastewater Facility, located at 5555 West 56th Avenue, Arvada, CO which is one block west of Sheridan and south of Ralton Road, on 56th Ave. from 6 pm to 9 pm. For directions and a map, check the Meetings Page, or call Judy or Tara at 303-431-3042. We will have snacks and beverages for everyone! We are hoping for an excellent turnout. Please RSVP by Monday, May 20, as space is limited. Call Judy or Tara, leave a voice message or e-mail your RSVP to judy-sc@ci.arvada.co.us

April 23, 2002

Just to clear up some confusion, the RSVP date for the May 1st meeting is April 26th, not May 26th as printed on the postcard. Over on the Meetings Page, the RSVP is listed correctly, along with contact information, so head over there. Please don't miss this meeting, as the Bennett's Barbeque will be awesome!

April 19th, 2002

The evening Marshall-Rodeno BBQ meeting is in a couple weeks, so be sure to head on over to the Meetings Page to get the information for that RSVP. Should be a fun meeting with some great food!

April 1, 2002

The March-April Advertising guide is online, you can view it here. Our apologies for getting it out late, but please take the time to check it out. It should be slightly smaller this time for those on a modem and should download faster.

Also, we just received the Fort Collins Northern Subchapter newsletter with news of an important meeting on April 9th, highly recommended if you test in the northern part of Colorado.

One last note, the monthly meeting is in two days in Arvada, check out the Meetings Page for location and more info...

March 28, 2002

The April Newsletter is out, you can view it here...

March 26, 2002

Long time since an update, all quiet on the western front here :) The February minutes have been uploaded to the Newsletters & Minutes page, so check'em out if you missed the meeting.

March 3, 2002

The Advertising Guide is finally finished and you can view it here. It is also posted at the bottom of the Newsletters & Minutes page for future reference. In the future, this guide will be connected to the Newsletter instead of a separate document, but we wanted to get it out as soon as it was completed. I should also mention the fact that if you haven't upgraded your Adobe Acrobat Reader lately, version 5.05 is out, and it has many really cool upgraded features worth checking out. As always, the reader itself is a free download, just click on the Adobe graphic on the Home page to go to the download site.

The Advertising Guide has been many months in the planning, and its purpose has been to defray the cost of monthly mailings, so be sure and visit or contact these sponsors for your backflow needs.

March 1, 2002

The Newsletter & Minutes page was updated with the March 2002 edition (which should also hit email today) and the Northern Subchapter Newsletter as well. Both contain upcoming meeting information so be sure to check them out.

February 20, 2002

Just a reminder about the upcoming luncheon meeting at Fanning & Associates, which exactly 2 weeks from today. Head on over to the Meetings Page for all the info, and make sure to contact Lisa with an RSVP. I should also note that the meetings for the rest of the year have been updated with the latest data. There are a couple open spots that should be filled shortly.

We've received a few more votes in the current poll, and Saturday is leading Wednesday 9-5, so if you have a preference on the day, be sure and head over there and cast your vote. Even with the lightning storms last year, we all had a great time at one of the more informal CBPA meetings. Its a great chance to just chit-chat with the other members and enjoy some great food!

The minutes for the January 2002 meeting have been post, go to the Newsletters & Minutes page to view them.

February 12, 2002

Well, we have a whopping 6 votes in the new poll :) Looks like a tie so far between Wednesday and Saturday for the Annual BBQ. Be sure and get your vote in as they are always a lot of fun, and by voting, your officers have a better feel for the best date, and a great turnout.

On another note, the City of Aurora has a permanent entry level position (with benefits) in their cross connection control section. If you are certified, or know someone certified that may be interested, check this page for COA job application info. This specific job is not listed on that page, but the deadline to submit an application is Friday 2/22. You can email for more info, questions or contact information.

February 7, 2002

Ok, I've added a freebie polling software to the site, the question of the day, and of interest to the Officers... "What day should the Annual BBQ & Picnic be held?" After last years BBQ, we're trying to find the best day for all our members to get together for some food and fun :) It is linked off the Home Page in the links column on the left, or just click here.

February 4, 2002

Just another reminder, the Northern Subchapter is having a meeting at 6:00 pm (not 7:00 pm as it was mentioned somewhere) February 19th to elect new officers, also, the main meeting is in two days down in Castle Rock. Please check the Meetings Page for all the latest info...

February 2, 2002

The Meetings Page was updated with information on the next meeting for the Northern Subchapter in Fort Collins, which will be for the election of their officers. If you attend the meetings, be sure to not miss this one.

I have also archived all the rest of the 2001 News on this page to the 2001 News Archive, so head over there if you need to check anything out :)

January 29, 2002

The February Newsletter was uploaded, so check it out on this page... if you received the email version, ignore the part at the bottom where it mentions the elections (thanks for spotting that Leigh).

January 16, 2002

There is a mandatory meeting for backflow testers (to be on the approved testers list) in the Colorado Springs area, hosted by the Colorado Springs Utilities department. The meeting is taking place on February 7th, and will also require that you bring your current certification and gauge calibration. Here is a link to a document with more information.

We also received an offer via email that might be of interest, a company called Sharper Video Productions has created a 45 minute video tape that reviews step-by-step the USC testing procedures for the RP, DCV, SPVB and PVB. It costs about $29.95 plus $5 S&H, and you can get the full scoop here.

Finally, the 2002 Officers page was updated, our good buddy down south, Dutch Mead has a change of email address, so if you need to contact him, you might update your address book. The December minutes are also online on the Newsletter & Minutes page. There was a meeting of you new officers yesterday, and it should be another exciting year for the CBPA. We are finalizing emails (which should be working as you read this) for them, so feel free to contact us with your ideas for the coming year!

January 8, 2002

The 2002 Officers page has been updated, and I'm trying a new technique in how to use tables in webpage display. I'd be interested in how Netscape Navigator users see the page now, and if it presents better now. Based on what I've learned about the issue, it should scale a lot better now for those of you who view this site in lower resolutions. If you as a Netscape user see other pages with issues, or just wish to comment on the change to the Officers page, email me here J

January 6, 2002

Well, we've made it into the new year, hope everyone had a good and uneventful New Years Eve! The January 2nd meeting in Arvada included the ballot count, and was a close race for both Vice President and Secretary. Below are the results:

President Judy Schmidt
Vice President Jason Everts
Secretary Paul Tedesco
Treasurer Leigh Fenton

Congratulations to the new officers, and thanks to the exiting officers, Fred Spengler and Tamra Krebs, for their hard work in 2001! The votes were also counted for the Photo Contest, and the results will be posted shortly, I forgot to bring the final count home, and will get that up this coming week.
